The Inaugural EAWS 2008 will bring together women from the continent of Africa and other emerging markets, drawing from all sectors of society, community and industry. They will resonate the voice of women of the world, calling attention to the need to generate awareness and to identify tangible solutions to empower their community. Here, women will recognise their emerging roles as catalysts for economic development and social progress.

The Symposium shares the vision of the Government of Zambia on Gender in Development and is well-aligned with the objectives of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which are to encourage and empower the women of Africa to realize and fulfil their roles as nation-builders.

The Symposium will create a common platform where individuals, professionals, community leaders, citizen groups, public and private institutions, businesses and companies and other organizations can network, identify viable opportunities and promote new ideas for women to participate in various sectors of economic life.

The Patron of the EAWS is Madam First Lady of Zambia, Mrs Maureen Mwanawasa, who has said that the liberation of the female resource for development is a “continental challenge”. In this Video, entitled ‘Women Find Their Voice in Zambia’, she shares her aspirations and objectives to ensure that Africa’s Gender-Agenda succeeds. The Video focuses on the evolution of the Zambian woman who has now taken on many key positions in mainstream development – as politicians, bankers, educators, policymakers and also professionals. Through this Inaugural Symposium, Zambia hopes to play a role in the continuing transformation and empowerment of women.
